Punjab and Haryana were reeling under a severe cold wave even as dense fog hit normal life today across the two neighbouring states.
People were in for bone-chilling conditions as minimum temperatures dropped several notches below normal in various parts of the two states.
Amritsar in Punjab was the coldest recorded place across the two agrarian states as it shivered at 2.4 degrees Celsius, the MeT department report said here.
Ludhiana, the industrial hub of Punjab, and Patiala braved cold weather at 4.7 degrees Celsius and 4.8 degrees Celsius respectively, the report said.
Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala and Ambala in Haryana had also recorded severe chill during daytime yesterday as the maximum temperature hovered close to 10 degrees Celsius in the four towns.
Chandigarh also experienced piercing cold as the temperature last night settled at 4.4 degrees Celsius, two notches below normal.
In neighbouring Haryana, the minimum in Ambala settled at 5.2 degrees Celsius, three notches below normal and 5.4 degrees Celsius in Hisar, two notches below normal.
Karnal and Narnaul recorded lows at 5 degrees Celsius, the report said.
The MeT department said cold weather conditions will continue in Punjab and Haryana while fog will occur at some places in both states during early morning and late evening hours over the next two days.
