Newman made several announcements during his trip including a new deal between Sinclair Knight Merz and India's Adani Group, to supply engineering services, The Courier-Mail reported.

Newman promoted Queensland as an education destination in India, stating that there were 13,000 Indian students in his state, contributing USD 330 million to the economy.

"The importance that India places on Queensland as an education and training hub complements our industries. With the Indian Government promoting skills development as a major national priority, Queensland's quality vocational education and training sector is well placed to assist in meeting those needs," he said.

Last year, international education and training was Queensland's second largest services export, accounting for USD 2.35 billion in export earnings and employing around 17,000 people, he added.

"I look forward to expanding the opportunities for this sector, to help with the growing demand," he said.

Newman was accompanied by a group of 76 senior business representatives in India.

He has also announced hosting of India's Maharaja Cup polo tournament on the Gold Coast in Australia from 2013.

"The Maharaja Cup is an exclusive polo tournament held under the patronage of His Highness the Maharaja Raghav Raj Singh of Shivrati, Udaipur, which is proposed to move between India and Australia annually," Newman was quoted as saying by Courier-Mail.

He further highlighted that his trip would reap many benefits in future. He said during the trip he had a chance meeting at a dinner with an Indian power station owner who he introduced to a Queensland coal producer.

"He has coal resources that he is trying to find Indian partners for and that is how it works," he said adding India's energy supply issues created countless opportunities for Queensland, not only from coal export but also mining services.
