Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday paid rich tributes to freedom fighters on the 76th anniversary of the Quit India movement.

Mumbai Congress leaders Milind Deora and Eknath Gaikwad visited August Kranti Maidan in South Mumbai and laid a wreath at the Martyrs Memorial.

"My humble tributes to those freedom fighters who sounded the bugle for India's independence," Fadnavis tweeted.

Schoolchildren also visited the Martyrs Memorial to pay their respects.

On this date in 1942, Mahatma Gandhi gave a clarion call to end the British rule and launched the Quit India movement at the session of the All-India Congress Committee in Mumbai.

Gandhiji gave the call to 'do or die' in his Quit India speech delivered at the Gowalia Tank Maidan, now called the August Kranti Maidan.

When all top Congress leaders were arrested, Aruna Asaf Ali led the citizens in Mumbai to hoist the national flag at Gowalia Tank Maidan.

Five years after the Quit India movement was launched, India achieved independence.
