Railways freight earnings up by 10.70 pc in fiscal 2011-12

Railways carried 969.78 million tonnes (MT) of freight during April 2011-March 2012 as compared to 921.51 MT carried during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 5.24 per cent.

Of the total Rs 68,965.44 crore earnings, Rs 28,613.81 crore came from transportation of 455.80 MT of coal, followed by Rs 7284.80 crore from 104.71 MT of iron ore for exports, steel plants and from other domestic users, according to data provided by Railways.

Railways earned Rs 6,719.72 crore from transporting 107.57 MT of cement, Rs. 4,634.05 crore from ferrying 45.56 MT of food-grains and Rs 3,665.19 crore from 41.09 MT of petroleum oil and lubricant. PTI ARU
