Rajahmahendravaram is the ancient name of the city which dates back to the Chalukya period.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu chaired the meeting.
He later told reporters that government decided to rename the historical city as per the wishes of the local people.
A notification in this regard would be issued soon.
Naidu also said the government had agreed to revise the rates of Polavaram irrigation project works based on the present rates.
Another decision of the cabinet, he said, was allocation of 852 acres of land for Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation at Krishnapatnam in Nellore district.
