Rajasthan starts taking Maggi samples for testing

Food Inspection officers in all the districts have been asked to carry out inspection and collect two samples daily

Rajasthan government today started inspection and sample collection of Maggi noodles from markets across the state, following reports of high lead and monosodium glutamate (MSG) content in the popular snack.

"Food Inspection officers in all the districts have been asked to carry out inspection and collect two samples daily. Similar products will also be covered under the campaign," Additional Director (Rural Heath), Medical and Heath department, Aditya Atrey said.

The officers will have to submit compliance report on a daily basis, he said, adding, the samples collected from different batches and dates will be tested for such contents.

A letter to launch the special campaign till June 10 was written by Atrey yesterday following directions of the Health Minister.

"All the food inspectors of the state have been directed to collect random samples of Maggi noodles from the retail stores from across the state. The samples would then be sent to Ghaziabad for test in laboratory, he told adding the report is expected within 15 days," said State Health minister Rajendra Rathore, who was on a day visit to Kota on Wednesday.

The state may also ban Maggi, like other states if the product is found sub standard and unhealthy. No compromise regarding the heath of the people would be made, he added.

"At least 70 samples Maggi and other noodles this type are set be collected from Kota district during the drive from June 4- 10," Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO), Kota, R N Yadav said.
