Union Minister Jairam Ramesh today said the next Lok Sabha election would be a clear battle between Congress and RSS, drawing prompt reaction from BJP President Rajnath Singh who accused Congress of communalising the poll.
"The 2014 Lok Sabha election will be a clear battle between Congress and RSS and we are confident of winning against the communal force. BJP is singing to the tune of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat," Ramesh told a press conference at the WBPCC headquarters here.
Unable to fight against Congress on political line, the BJP, he said, was playing cards on communal line to polarise votes and win the battle. "But they won't be able to achieve their target," he said.
Asked to comment on Ramesh's statement, Singh retorted, "They are trying to commnualise the 2014 polls."
"RSS is not a political party. It is a socio-cultural organisation of the country. It is the biggest voluntary organisation in the world," he said.
Charging Congress with "indulging in communal and divisive politics whenever election comes," Singh said, "If anybody is responsible for not establishing communal harmony in the country, it is Congress. The British had followed the policy of divide and rule. After Independence, Congress has adopted that policy for vote bank politics," he said.
He said the Prime Minister had earlier stated that Muslims have the first right on the resources of India. Now the Union Home Minister has written to chief ministers that no innocent Muslim youth should be wrongfully detained.
