Mehmood Abdi, deputy president of Rajasthan Cricket Association and Lalit Modi's aide, today said the sports body is in a catch-22 situation and slammed the rival faction for "creating a bogus impression".
"If it sticks to its old constitution it defies Lodha Committee recommendation and the Supreme Court order. And if it implements the Lodha Committee reforms in its constitution it will be a violation of the state's Sports Act," Abdi said.
Slamming the rival faction led by C P Joshi, Abdi asserted that the decision to call off the RCA election was solely determined on legal grounds.
"We have taken strong exception to the bogus impression created by irresponsible statements about calling off the election process of the association scheduled for April 26th.
"The Joshi faction has alleged that there was 'something else' behind calling off the elections, but these allegations are baseless and also have a mollified intention because the decision to call off the election was solely determined on legal grounds," Abdi said.
Earlier in the day, the RCA elections slated for April 26, were stalled on the ground that the provisions of the Sports Act do not conform with the recommendations of Lodha Committee.
Crying foul, the Joshi faction said that it would mull all options, including moving the court.
Reacting to Abdi's comment, an official from the Joshi faction said that Abdi and former IPL Commissioner Modi's legal team was aware of these complications when they declared elections.
"For past few months they have been busy preparing ground for Ruchir Modi and they might have continued if the majority was with him.
"Earlier they were boasting that it was a mere formality and the registrar would raise no objection and will ratify the amendments in RCA constitution. The changed scenario where Ruchir Modi was deserted by his own supporters compelled them to hide behind the legal shield," the official said on the condition of anonymity.
