Red sander smuggler Gangi Reddy sent in judicial remand

International smuggler of red sandalwood Kollam Gangi Reddy, who was arrested in Mauritius, has been sent in judicial remand by a Port Louis court, Andhra Pradesh DGP J V Ramudu said here today.
Reddy, against whom non-bailable warrants were pending in 20 cases, was involved in a total of 27 red sander smuggling cases in Kadapa, Kurnool and Tirupati Urban districts.
"He was arrested by Mauritius Police and Interpol yesterday while escaping to Dubai. He was produced before a judicial court in Port Louis and is in judicial remand," said Ramudu.
The DGP said Reddy, an international smuggler of red sandalwood, through his acts was causing a great loss to environment of the state. He had been arrested by Dhone Police in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh and was remanded in judicial custody on April 5, 2014.

However, he obtained bail in lower court on May 16 and fled India for UAE on May 18 and had been absconding since then.
The bail granted by the lower court was subsequently cancelled by the AP High Court, the DGP said.

A Red Corner notice was issued by Interpol against him on September 18 last year. He went to Mauritius on February 1 this year from Madagascar, police said.
"Reddy deliberately gave false information of stay while entering Mauritius and was staying at different place on false name. AP Police are making efforts towards his exportation/extradition to subject him to the trial/judicial process in respect of cases he is involved in," the top cop said.

Reddy is one of the accused in the attempt on the life of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu at Alipiri in 2004.
