Members of the Congressional Asia Pacific American Caucus today applauded the confirmation of Richard Verma as the next US Ambassador to India, noting that he would play an invaluable role in strengthening ties between the two countries.
"His historic confirmation is a wonderful step forward for the Asian American community and marks the first time in history that an Indian-American has held this post," said Judy Chu, chairwoman of the Congressional Asia Pacific Caucus (CAPAC).
"I know that Verma's distinguished career in public service and strong expertise in human rights and national security will play an invaluable role in strengthening the ties between the US and India," she said.
Congressman Mike Honda said the Senate confirmation of Verma as next Ambassador to India is great news for both the US and India.
"As India enters an important transitional period, it's an enormous asset to have someone with his extensive foreign policy experience in this critical role," he said.
"As a member of Congress who represents Silicon Valley, home to one of the largest Indian-American populations in this country, I believe that Ambassador Verma's unique perspective as an Indian American will allow him to better appreciate the intricacies and nuances of our critical partnership with the Indian government," Honda said.
Noting that the relationship between the US and India is of critical importance, Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard said: "Verma will be representing our nation as he grows the friendships between our two countries, and advancing our shared interests, as we work together to pursue peace, stability, and economic growth in the Asia-Pacific region, and address a wide range of global challenges."
Congressman Charles B Rangel also applauded Verma's confirmation as the new US Ambassador to India.
"This nomination represents a momentous step in our relationship with India, but also represents an important milestone our country has made to support diversity at the highest levels of our diplomatic corps," he said.
Verma's nomination was yesterday confirmed by a voice vote. He served as assistant secretary of state for legislative affairs at the State Department in the Obama administration from 2009 to 2011.
He is currently a senior counsellor at Steptoe & Johnson law firm and the Albright Stonebridge Group, a business advisory company, led by former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.
