Downey Jr's involvement in the future of Marvel Studios' project has been the subject of much debate since the debut of "Iron Man 3".
The actor is believed to be reluctant to return for "Iron Man 4", with reports claiming that another sequel has not been part of the discussions, said The Hollywood Reporter.
"Avengers 2" has not been officially announced. It is expected to arrive in 2015 at the earliest. Negotiations with Downey Jr's fellow "Avengers" stars for the sequel have reportedly grown heated, with the actors demanding more money following the runaway success of last year's record-breaking blockbuster.
