Official sources said today that the heavy rains since the last few days had inundated several areas though the work executed in the past in some areas had minimised the impact of the rains. However the drainage canals have to be improved and for this a Rs 10 crore project has been launched, they said.
The project envisages cement flooring of the entire canal stretch in Melvaaikal. A similar one would be launched soon to link Karuvadikuppam with the town area.
The source said construction of check dams across several rivers had resulted in storage of water and fast recharging of sub soil water table. Check dams had been built across the Ariyankuppam river and several other water bodies, they said.
