In a daring heist, a prominent social welfare and charity centre was robbed of cash and gold worth over Rs 20 million today in Pakistan's crime-infested Karachi city.
Criminals held philanthropist and social worker Maulana Sattar Edhi at gunpoint and looted the centre of his Edhi Foundation in the old Mithadar area.
"I am shattered today because whatever happened in Karachi in the past, Edhi remained a respected name and we were spared to continue to do our social work," Sattar Edhi said.
"They knew where the cash and gold was kept because they took away nearly Rs 20 million including foreign currency and five kilos worth of gold," he said.
He said he was sleeping and was woken up by the robbers who held him at gunpoint and looted the cupboard where the cash and gold was kept.
"I thought they came to ask me about the Edhi centre but they started asking me about money. This money and gold was meant for the wedding of orphans and other charity work," he stated.
His son, Faisal, confirmed that eight to 10 men entered the centre and took his father and others present at the centre hostage.
