The temple city of Madurai, the second largest city in Tamil Nadu, will get a new drinking water suppy scheme at a cost of Rs.580-crore, city Mayor Rajan Chellappal told the Corporation council meeting here today.
The new drinking water scheme from the Kumuli Lower camp would bring sixty million litres of water for the City which has a population of 15 lakh.
Curretly, the city was getting only 140 million litres a day, leading to water shortage.
The Mayor also said that he would inquire about the Park near the famous historical landmark of this city--Mannar Tirumalai Naicker--being taken over by the Archaeological department.
The council meeting also witnessed a debate over a Zonal chairman--Raja Pandi--wearing black shirt. The DMK councillors drew the attention of the Mayor to an AIADMK councillor wearing black shirt, and pointed out that they were not allowed to wear black shirt and removed from the meeting hall earlier.
They, however, kept quiet after the AIADMK councillor explained that he was wearing black shirt because Jayalalithaa was not chief minister.
