Two young Indian women sailors were leading a small bunch of six teams after day two of the Asian Games sailing at the Wangsan Sailing Marina here today.
In the two-person 29er completion for women, Indian duo of Varsha Gautham and Aishwarya Nedunchezhiyan led the six-team competition with 9 net penalty points after discarding one of the six races they had sailed so far.
The Indian duo finished 4th in the sixth race today on the back of winning the first three races and were just ahead of the Thailand duo who too had the same number of penalty points (9) after one discard.
Sailing team's manager, Commodore K D Singh, told PTI that the picture would be clearer tomorrow after two more races are gone through.
"I can't say now. Things will be clearer tomorrow," he said when asked about the women's chances of winning a medal.
"You know things change so quickly in this sport. Yesterday the winds were good before dying down in the end. Today they were not encouraging. Tomorrow the predictions are good. I'm keeping my fingers crossed," he said.
There are 12 races in all and the teams have the option of discarding their two worst results, he added.
Indian sailors were in the middle or rear of the pack in the other four events that have commenced -- two in women's and the same number in men's -- and after two days did not appear to be heading towards reaching medal standard in any of these.
In the men's Optimist (one person) dinghy, Chitresh Tatha was sailing in 6th place out of ten competitors by finishing fifth in the sixth race and has so far accumulated 29 penalties with one discard.
In the corresponding women's class, India's Ramya Sarvanan stood sixth after discarding one of the six races she finished competing in. Her best show was also today - a 5th place finish - from 8 competitors.
