Second National Lok Adalat to be held on Dec 6 in all courts

With an aim to reduce pendency of cases in courts, the second National Lok Adalat will be held on December 6 in all courts across the country, including the Supreme Court.
The Lok Adalat, being organised by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), is aimed at disposing of lakhs of cases. Last year, around 71 lakh cases were settled in the first National Lok Adalat held on November 23.
The Lok Adalat will be inaugurated by Supreme Court judge A R Dave, who is also the chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee.
In the Supreme Court, three Lok Adalat benches will sit and 53 cases, including matrimonial disputes and motor accident compensation claims, will be taken up for disposal.

The programme will be viewed all over the country through video conferencing and web casting.
"Lakhs of cases have been identified and referred to the National Lok Adalat and a few lakhs are expected to be finally disposed of. Once so disposed, there will be further no appeal in these cases. Thus it will have a significant impact on the judicial system," the press release, issued by NALSA, said.

"The National Lok Adalat aims at reducing the pendency in the courts while at the same time drawing the attention of the public to the efficacious alternative disputes resolution method of Lok Adalat," it said.

A large number of criminal compoundable cases, cheque bounce and bank recovery cases, civil suits motor accident claims and family matters will be taken up during the National Lok Adalat.
Apart from these, in many states, revenue matters, land acquisition references, consumer matters, service and labour matters will also be taken up for the amicable settlements.
Besides the Lok Adalat, a large number of petty criminal cases will also be taken up on Saturday by special sittings of magistrates and judges.
To encourage people for opting Lok Adalats settlements even before coming to the courts, pre-litigation cases will also be taken up in National Lok Adalat with the traffic challan, it said.
