Share mining wealth with affected people, says official

Wealth generated by mining should also be shared with people affected by the activity, a senior mining official has said.
"The wealth generated by mining is not for companies and governments alone. The places and people affected by mining must share its benefits," Deputy Director General of Mines Safety, Southern Zone, P K Sarkar said here inaugurating an expo and two-day symposium on mining.
He underlined the need for the Indian mining sector to play a major role by attaining 10 per cent growth, a release by Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) said.
"The mining sector should focus more on safety measures to reduce fatalities," he said, adding due importance must be given to occupational safety and health practices at work places.

NLC CMD Surender Mohan stressed the importance of mining and power sector and how they were crucial for the country's economic growth.
The exhibition on mining and the symposium were held from July 17 in commemoration of Silver Jubilee celebrations of the Tamil Nadu Chapter of Mining Engineers Association of India (MEAI), NLC and in association with several others.
