According to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner, the actor was found unresponsive at his Los Angeles-area residence on Friday morning, reported Entertainment Weekly.
A cause of death has not yet been determined.
Born in Sherman Oaks, California, Heron made his feature film debut at the age of 13 in the 1995 Disney film "Tom and Huck".
The next year, he had the biggest role of his career as the lead in "Shiloh", where he played Marty Preston, a young boy who rescues a hunting dog from an abusive owner. As a child actor, Heron also starred in the TV movie "Trilogy of Terror II" and the WB sitcom "Nick Freno: Licensed Teacher".
According to TMZ, Heron had a history of heroin use, and recently checked out of rehab. He channelled his past addiction for a role in the recent Tribeca Film Festival entry "A Thousand Junkies".
His last role will be alongside Kevin Dillon in the upcoming racing film "Dirt".
