"I have been unwell for some time. I had developed stomach-related ailment and was in hospital for a month. Now I am at home taking rest," Benegal told PTI.
The 78-year-old director-writer was admitted to Jaslok hospital in south Mumbai between March and April.
"I am on road to recovery. It will take four weeks for me to recover. I still have some weakness," he said.
Benegal is known for directing cinema classics like 'Ankur' (1973), 'Nishant' (1975), 'Manthan' (1976), 'Bhumika' (1977), 'Junoon' (1978), 'Mandi' (1983), 'Trikal' (1985) among others.
He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1976 and the Padma Bhushan in 1991. On 8 August 2007, Benegal was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2005.
He has won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi seven times.
