Sikkim ranked first in implementation of Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan

The north eastern state of Sikkim has been ranked first in the country in implementation of Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan according to latest report by Union Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation.
Sikkim with 6,10,577 inhabitants (according to 2011 census) has the highest 100 per cent sanitation coverage in the country setting an example for others to follow, official sources said today.
It is the only state in the country which has achieved the highest sanitation coverage in both rural and urban areas in households, schools, sanitary complexes and Aanganwadi centers, they said.
The state has also sensitised people to adopt a holistic approach to improve sanitation and hygiene for a clean environment while accelerating overall development in the state.

The state has constructed total 98,043 individual household latrines (IHHL) against the target of 87,014 IHHL upto February 2014 by achieving 112.67 per cent target under the scheme.
Sikkim constructed 61,493 IHHL for BPL families against the target of constructing 51,302 IHHL by achieving 119.86 per cent target under the scheme.

It also constructed 36,550 IHHL against the target of 35,712 IHHL for APL families by achieving 102.35 per cent of the target.
Total 1,772 school have been covered under total sanitation programme as against the target of covering 1,604 schools under the programme.
Around 1,105 sanitary complex were constructed as against the target of 789 sanitary complexes. A total of 516 Anganwadi toilets were constructed in the state as against the target of 340 Anganwadi toilets during the same period.

Sikkim has also set the new benchmark for utilisations of funds under the scheme. The state received Rs 3323.02 lakhs funds under the scheme out of which it has utilised Rs 3296.28 lakh and achieved 99.20 per cent utilisation under the scheme till February 2014, the sources said.
