Singapore sets Sep 23 as Prez polling day

Singapore will hold Presidential polls on September 23 if more than one candidate qualifies to run for the position, Elections authorities said today.
Former Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob, Indian-origin businessman Mohamed Salleh Marican and Farid Khan Kaim Khan are bidding to qualify for the election.
If there is only one eligible candidate, he or she will be declared as the President on Nomination Day.
If elected, Halimah will be the Singapore's first woman President.
Singaporeans will vote for their eighth President on September 23. The winner will be the second Malay president in Singapore's history, and the first to be chosen in a presidential election reserved for candidates of a specific community.

Singaporeans will know if they will get to cast their vote or if the election will be a walkover on Nomination Day which is set on September 13, The Straits Times reported.

The Presidential elections Committee will screen all presidential hopefuls and inform them of the decision on September 12.
Candidates must apply for a certificate of eligibility, as well as a community certificate confirming they belong to the Malay community.
So far, three people of Malay origins have thrown their hat in the ring.
