Thousands of youths had gathered to gain entry to the BSF camp on the NH 34 to participate in the physical test for the post of Constable, the sources said.
As soon as the gates were opened there was a mad rush among the candidates to gain entry. In the stampede at least six youths were injured, the sources said.
The Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Kalyani Chandrasekhar Bardhan said "a few persons were injured in the incident and we are looking into it."
Unofficial sources alleged that one candidate died in the stampede.
"It was around 6.30 AM, the gate of the BSF camp opened. The awaiting youths started a mad rush to get inside. A few fell down in the stampede. I also was injured from the rush," a victim Prakash Mondal said.
