Skill devp programme for workers in Delhi; DMRC, L&T roped in

The Delhi government has launched a hands-on skill development programme for construction workers, roping in prominent employers such as L&T, DMRC and NBCC.
Under the programme, the workers will be imparted skill training at their workplace by trainers of the three firms engaged by the labour department.
In the city, there are around 4.92 lakh construction workers registered with the Delhi Construction Board, headed by Labour Minister Gopal Rai.
"We have signed an MoU with Delhi Metro, NBCC (National Building Construction Corporation) and L&T to provide skill training to workers at their construction sites.
"Through skill development programme, the labour department will develop skills of construction workers so that their employability could be enhanced," said a senior government official.

The trainers will work to develop skills like masonry, carpentry, padding, and other construction-related trades.

In March, the Delhi government had decided to hike by 37 per cent the minimum wages of unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled workers.
The official said that once skills are upgraded, the construction workers would be able to get enhanced wages.
According to rules, for an unskilled worker, the minimum wages is Rs 13,350 per month while for semi-skilled persons, it is Rs 14,698.
Skilled persons should get least Rs 16,182 per month in the city.
