As the Paris climate agreement comes into force on Friday, India and other countries will display smiley with the slogan "we did it" on important buildings and monuments.

In India, which ratified the historic agreement on 2 October, one side of the Environment Ministry's building will display the smiley through lights on Friday.

The image will have the globe as the background of smiley. Along with the image, "Paris agreement - We did it - #SmileforthePlanet" will be displayed on one side of the building in the evening.

"Since tomorrow is the coming into force of the Paris agreement, the Ministry will display a smiley (through light) on the building which will be there till 24 hours," Environment Minister Anil Madhav Dave said.

Senior officials of the Environment Ministry said that the image will be displayed in other parts of the world as well. In France, the image will be put up on the Eiffel Tower.

"It is a global effort," a top official said.

India ratified the Paris agreement on 2 October, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Till now around 94 nations have ratified it out of 197 Parties to the Convention.

The Paris agreement will enter into force on 4 November, 2016, thirty days after the date on which at least 55 Parties to the Convention accounting in total for at least an estimated 55 per cent of the total global greenhouse gas emissions have deposited their instruments of ratification, acceptance, approval or accession with the depositary.

The Paris Agreement was adopted on 12 December 2015 at the twenty-first session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change held in Paris from 30 November to 13 December 2015.
