Gross earnings of South Eastern Railway (SER) in the first 9 months of this current fiscal has gone up by 8.76 per cent to Rs 9,170 crore compared to its earnings in the same period last year.

"The gross earnings up to December in 2015-16 have risen to Rs 9,170 crore. This is 8.76 per cent higher than the earnings in the same period last year," SER General Manager A K Goel said here today.

The GM was speaking at a programme where Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu flagged off new trains for the SER here at the Howrah station here today.

SER manages 4 per cent of total railway tracks of Indian Railways carrying around 11-12 per cent of the total goods traffic transported, Goel stated.

"It's also heartening to mention that as on today, SER has crossed 100 million tonnes in freight loading in this financial year which is an improvement of about 7.4 per cent over last year," the SER GM said.

SER, though predominantly a freight carrying railway, has been giving equal importance in the areas of passenger services, Goel said.

On an average, SER runs 994 trains daily including 544 Mail or Express, passenger and suburban trains. Besides, it ran 498 special trains including 164 premium or Suvidha trains till December in the current financial year to clear extra rush of passengers, he added.

"On the punctuality front, SER has been consistently maintaining above 90 per cent punctuality for Mail/Express trains," Goel stated.
