Noting that Tamil Nadu reported highest number of road mishaps in the country in 2015, he said commercial vehicles travelling at high speeds on highways were one of the main reasons for the accidents.
Addressing a press conference here as part of a nation-wide awareness campaign on road safety, he said the Centre had issued a notification in April 2015 making it compulsory to fit speed governors for transport vehicles. However, it was not being implemented fully.
Giving figures on road accidents in Tamil Nadu, he said "As per the National Crime Records Bureau report, in 2015, there were 79,746 injuries and 15,642 deaths in the 69,059 road accidents. In 2014, out of the 67,250 accidents, 77,725 were injured while there was 15,190 deaths".
