Amidst high drama, a spurned lover allegedly attempted to kill his ex-girlfriend and neighbour by slashing her throat with a knife at her residence and then pretended to commit suicide by jumping off a 22-storeyed building under construction in suburban Chembur today.
Ajay Dhotre (20), a resident of Ayodhya Nagar slums in Chembur, was later arrested by police.
According to RCF police station officials here, Dhotre and the 16-year-old victim were in a relationship for the past three years. After her parents learnt about the affair, the girl began avoiding the accused.
After he failed in his attempts to revive their relationship, a furious Dhotre went to the girl's residence at around 11.30 am today when she was alone and attacked her, the police said.
"The girl's parents had gone to work and her brother had gone out. Dhotre, who was waiting for an opportunity, sneaked into the house, gagged her and then slashed her neck with a knife. At that time, the girl's grandmother reached the house and knocked the door but there was no response. When she began banging the door, the boy came out of the house and ran away after pushing the elderly woman," Deputy Police Commissioner (DCP) Dhananjay Kulkarni said.
Later, the police received information that Dhotre was in a 22-storeyed building which is under construction and was threatening to commit suicide.
"We spoke to the accused's friends and sent them to talk to him. His friends went to the top floor of the building and began pursuing him not to take any extreme step when a police team already there, surrounded him and caught him at around 2 pm," the DCP said.
After more than two hours of drama, the accused was arrested on charges of attempt to murder, criminal assault and wrongful restraint, the police official said, adding that "the girl is undergoing treatment and is out of danger.
