Union Minister Ananth Kumar today said the stabbing of Karnataka Lokayukta Justice P Vishwanatha Shetty was "shocking" and this showed the complete break down of law and order under the Congress-led government in the state.
Shetty was stabbed multiple times today and left bleeding profusely by a man, who had gone to his office with a complaint, only to be told that the case was shut.
Shetty, in his early 70s, was rushed to a nearby hospital and is stated to be out of danger.
"It is deeply shocking that even Karnataka Lokayukta is not safe in Bengaluru. This shows complete break down of law and order in the state," Kumar told reporters here.
"The attack on the Lokayukta shows that the law and order in the state has collapsed completely and nothing is left now. Such incidents are occurring due to goonda raj, mafia raj and jungle raj prevailing in the state and which the Congress government has not been able to curb," he alleged.
The Siddaramaiah-led government should probe the matter, arrest the culprits and punish them strictly, Kumar said and wished for Shetty's fast recovery.
The Lokayukta collapsed after the assailant, Tejaraj Sharma, attacked him at his chamber in a multi-storeyed building near the Vidhana Soudha (state secretariat), according to officials and eyewitnesses.
Attacking the state government for increase in such incidents, Kumar said, "24 BJP workers have been killed in last one month. It is happening for the first time a Lokayukta Justice has been attacked."
IPS officers and other honest officers have died in mysterious circumstances recently but the state has treated their deaths as suicide, he added.
