Filmmaker Omung Kumar, who is bringing his next biopic "Sarbjit", says he has tried to stay true to the subject without taking any creative liberties.
"We have made this true to the heart. We have followed the exact story of what Dalbir (Kaur)(Sarabjit's sister) has told us," Omung said when asked if he has taken any creative liberty for the film.
"Emotions run high as we see in the trailer. We knew very less about Sarabjit (and) only what Dalbir (Kaur) told us," he told reporters here at the trailer launch of "Sarbjit".
The movie, starring Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan, Randeep Hooda, Richa Chadda, Darshan Kumar among others, is based on Indian convict Sarabjit Singh, who died following an assault by fellow prisoners at a Pakistani jail.
"We have stayed true to the story. We have not changed anything. It is true to the facts, which are out there everywhere," the "Mary Kom" helmer added.
Initially, Omung was not that keen to direct another biopic but the story of Sarabjit and Dalbir made him say yes to the project.
"Sandeep Singh (producer) came to me with this idea. I was mesmerised with the story as it was a hard hitting story. People know the story but not its depth," the filmmaker added.
Aishwarya is playing Sarabjit's sister Dalbir while Randeep Hooda will be seen in the titular role in the film slated to release on May 20.
"When we were shooting for this film, it was my wish that even if one person comes out of prison, it would serve the purpose of my film. I have said earlier that lets start a foundation 'Bring them Home' (prisoners) and we have started one," he added.
