A division bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and M S Sonak was hearing a public interest litigation filed by Jayprakash Unecha two years back seeking a direction to the government to initiate steps to tackle the bogus ration cards issue.
"Once a ration card is found to be bogus, the government should stop supplying food grains and commodities to the holder of the card and also initiate steps to prosecute. Stop giving benefits to bogus ration card holders. This is siphoning of government funds," Justice Chandrachud said.
"The government in an affidavit filed in November last year said that a committee has been formed and report would be submitted to the chief secretary. But nothing has been done till date," the court said.
The petition has been posted for hearing on December 6.
