Storage position of major reservoirs less than last year: CWC

The storage position of 85 major reservoirs of the country is less than that of last year, the Central Water Commission today said as India received 516 mm of rainfall as compared to normal precipitation of 630.4 mm.
According to the latest data on water storage issued by the CWC, "the present storage position during current year is less than storage position of last year but better than the average storage of last 10 years."
The IMD says the country as a whole has received 516 mm of rainfall as compared to normal precipitation of 630.4 mm, which is minus 18 per cent. The figure has stayed constant more or less for the past three weeks.
States having better storage than last year for corresponding period are Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
States having lesser storage than last year for corresponding period are Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Odisha, West Bengal, Tripura, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, CWC said.
The water storage available in 85 reservoirs as on August 28 was 102.741 billion cubic metre, which is 66 per cent of total storage capacity of these reservoirs.
The current storage is 83 per cent of the storage of corresponding period of last year and 100 per cent of storage of average of last ten years, the hydrological body said.
