A general strike was observed in the city today to protest the continuation of toll collection by the private firm IRB.
The western Maharashtra city is simmering with agitation against the toll collection on roads for the past one month.
Shiv Sena, BJP, RPI and Swabhimani Shetakari Sangathana workers burnt effigies in the street, while workers of Hindu Yuva Pratishthan immersed themselves in Rankala lake and observed a fast.
After yesterday's police lathi-charge against protesters and arrest of corporators, Anti-Toll Action Committee appealed citizens to observe a total bandh in the district.
Workers of Kolhapur Municipal Corporation and Kolhapur Municipal Transport too participated.
