The railway gateman found the substance near the signal box on the northern side of the station and immediately informed the station master, they said.
The station master in turn informed police, who rushed to the spot with a bomb detection squad.
The substance was seized and disposed off, they said.
A case under section 4 of the Explosive Substance Act, 1908 has been registered and investigation is underway, police added.
