Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) issue today rocked Haryana Assembly with opposition Congress and INLD creating ruckus by accusing BJP government in the state of being a mute spectator on the river water issue with Punjab.
The Assembly passed a resolution to condemn Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal for his reported statement of "not accepting any verdict against his state's interest on river water".
The House also witnessed spar between treasury benches and opposition members in Haryana Vidhan Sabha which was convened to mark the 50 years of the formation of the state.
After the obituary resolutions, the INLD demanded adjournment motion in the House to hold discussion on several issues including SYL, farmers' plight, crop insurance, among others.
When Speaker Kanwar Pal pointed out that the debate could not be held on more than one issue citing rules, INLD members said the House should hold discussion on river water which is a serious issue at this moment.
Leader of Opposition and INLD MLA Abhay Chautala informed the House that when the state was celebrating the golden jubilee celebrations on November 1, the Punjab Chief Minister announced not to share a single drop of water and that would not abide by the verdict of Supreme Court.
"Badal made this statement in front of BJP President (Amit Shah) and Union Finance minister (Arun Jaitley). They may have listened to this statement while anticipating political gains (during Punjab elections). But why should we remain a mute spectator on this issue. It seems you want to help Akalis with which you have an alliance," he said.
"Whether you (Khattar) agree with the statement of the Punjab CM, if you do not, then why discussion cannot be held on this issue. A motion to condemn (statement of Badal) be passed," demanded Chautala.
Replying to Chautala, Khattar said his government would never compromise with the interest of Haryana and expressed hope that the SC verdict on river water issue would be in favour of the state.
He further said it was not acceptable if anybody makes statement that he would not follow the verdict of apex court, apparently referring to Badal.
When treasury benches asked Chautala to first break "ties" with Akali Dal, the INLD leader said it was only his party which had opposed Punjab's stand on the issue of SYL and had even broken political ties with Akalis.
