Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh today ordered immediate withdrawal of all illegal buses plying on the state's roads and asked the Transport and the Vigilance Department to submit an action-taken report within 10 days.
The chief minister's directive came at the cabinet meeting held here today to finalise the schedule of the Budget Session of the state assembly and to take several other vital decisions, said an official press release.
Taking serious note of reports on a large number of illegal private buses plying on Punjab roads, he directed the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) to check all such buses that pose a serious danger to the lives of innocent people.
Noting that these buses were plying in blatant violation of the rules, he made it clear that no laxity in the matter would be tolerated and officials found guilty of dereliction or complicity would have to face punishment.
Reiterating his commitment to eliminate all mafias from the state, he expressed serious concern over some media reports that the transport mafia continued to run unchecked.
He also warned the transport department of strict action if they fail to take necessary action to end the rampant violation of the transport rules and regulations.
Amarinder also directed the vigilance department to identify such operators and take action against them.
He also called for expediting the transport policy being finalised by the department to "clean up the mess on the state's roads" and ensure that the safety and security of commuters is not compromised any further.
