The teacher who teaches computer science at the St Joseph's School in Imphal West district allegedly beat up a middle school student on Tuesday following which the members of Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) assaulted him yesterday, they said.
Sixteen members of DESAM, including its executive members, have been arrested in this connection and they will be produced in the court today, the police said.
After Tuesday's incident, parents of the student had lodged a complaint with the school authorities. But not being satisfied with the answer they had approached the DESAM.
The teacher then reported the matter to the school authorities after which his school colleagues sat on a sit-in protest outside the school office yesterday and also asked the students to join the protest, the police added.
