"The cheek of the student has swollen and she is under treatment," said block education officer (BEO) PK Padhy after conducting an inquiry into the incident which took place on Saturday at Mahatma Gandhi High School, Sheragada.
The girl was allegedly slapped as she failed to properly answer a question put to her by the mathematics teacher.
The teacher was removed from services following the recommendations of the BEO, according to the school management committee.
Following the incident, the BEO has written to the head masters of all schools in the district to properly guide their teachers against corporal punishment.
"I have written letters to the head masters to create awareness among the teachers of their respective schools and ensure that school premises are punishment-free zones," Padhy said.
