Arun Kumar raped the 17-year-old girl while she was alone at home in Velliyampalayam last evening, police said.
When the girl resisted the attempt and tried to scream, the accused gagged her due to which she suffocated, police said.
While he was trying to flee, locals caught him and handed him over to police.
Police produced him before the local court which remanded him to custody.
