"Upper caste people prevented a Dalit groom from riding a horse-cart during his marriage procession in Kurukshetra's Bhusthala village last night, leading to a clash between the two communities," SP Kurukshetra Simmardeep Singh said.
A police team was rushed to the spot and it helped the groom perform the ritual of 'ghud chadi' (riding horse). However, this irked upper caste people who started throwing stones at the policemen and the groom's relatives, he said.
The groom's father, Suresh Kumar, in a complaint filed at Jhansa police station alleged that about 25 people led by a block samiti member threatened to kill them if they entered their temple and stopped the groom from riding the horse-cart.
The head of the village, Rajinder Singh, said some "misguided" youths "created the situation" but it was brought under control with the help of police.
The SP said a large posse of police has been stationed in village to prevent any fresh violence.
