The incident occurred around 10 pm when the youth was stabbed and injured. As the news spread, a mob damaged the windshield of a four-wheeler parked in Vasant Nagar area.
Yavatmal superintendent of police M Rajkumar said over phone from Pusad the stabbing occurred during a clash between two groups of students of different communities, who are residents of Telugu Colony and Noor Colony, respectively.
"We have so far arrested 19 persons from both the communities in connection with the incident. Two FIRs have been registered under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC," Rajkumar said while dismissing the rumour of imposition of a curfew in the town.
The SP said he held a meeting of a peace committee and appealed to them to maintain peace and harmony.
