India's first multi-city marathon 'The Great India Run' will be flagged off by Sports Minister Vijay Goel and former World Championship bronze medallist Anju Bobby George at the India Gate here tomorrow.
The 1480 Km long run will feature 15 of the best ultra marathoners from Asia, Africa, United States of America and Europe including International champion Arun Bhardwaj, Denmark's David Bredo, Pia Hansson, South Africa's Melanie Delainey and Yuri Esperson, who holds 8 records in the former Soviet Union.
The run will also have celebrity athelete Milind Soman and Gul Panag. 'Ironman' Soman will run a special stretch of 570 kms from Ahmedabad to Mumbai via Silvassa.
The 20-day run will culminate on August 6 at Mumbai after covering six state including Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Mahrashtra and Delhi.
"With the help of this run people can test their endurances and take inspiration from the ultra runners that when you have the will then even 1480 km journey feels short," said national record holder Bhardwaj.
The Great India Run is conceptualised by Prosportify, which is partnering with Mobiefit to promote running as a sport in the country and to spread the message of fitness.
"The run is a great attempt of promoting running in India. Like cricket was not born here, running will also grow with the coming of local marathons like Delhi Road runners and Mumbai Marathon runners," said Comrades Marathon running champion Delainey.
To propagate the message of running, the run will also see an interesting fun run at every pit stop in Ghaziabad, Delhi, Gurgaon, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Silvassa and Mumbai for beginners to inspire them to take up the sport as a regular activity in their life.
"The run should be great fun and for it, I will have to adapt to the environment quickly and I am quite excited to be running in these new surroundings," said the 49-year-old, Hannson.
