The incident occurred when Kartik Saw (25) scuffled with members of the family of one Pushtam Pradhan in the village at the latter's house, an official said.
The police were alerted about the incident by the village Sarpanch Pradeep Saw.
After reaching the spot, a police team found Pradhan, his wife Premshila (43), their sons Ankit (15) and Abhinandan (18), daughter Kiran (21) and Saw lying in a pool of blood and rushed them to local hospital, he said.
Police are not yet clear about the exact circumstances in which the incident occurred.
When asked how Saw and others died, the official said they are investigating the matter.
Police have recovered a blood-soaked axe from the spot and a forensic team is collecting evidence, the official said.
He said among other angles, the police are also probing if Saw was having an affair with Kiran and if that triggered the incident.
