Former Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee today strongly criticised the Mamata Banerjee government and said that "it's a total failure and the state is going down each day in all respects" with no improvement in the agricultural and industrial scenario.
"Some people wanted a change in the state, but we knew its after effect. Those who brought in changes are now totally frustrated with the government's performance," the CPI(M) Politburo member said while addressing a rally here in North 24 Parganas district today.
"What steps the Trinamool Congress government has taken to improve the state's condition? The Chief Minister and her cabinet colleagues are more busy with Pujas, festivals and functions and spending lakhs of rupees on them, than focussing on the development activities," Bhattacharjee alleged.
"Failing to sell their produce at appropriate prices, farmers are committing suicide, while there is no investment for industries in the last two and a half years. Villages never had such an experience during our rule," Bhattacharjee said accusing the Trinamool Congress government in the state.
"We realised that without industries there could be no real development and that was why we initiated several steps and tried to improve the situation to create more employment opportunities," Bhattacharjee said.
"The Chief Minister is speaking blatant lies everyday to win the support of the minorities, but this will not help her in the long run. The minorities have started realising it," Bhattacharjee said, adding, the Left Front government during his tenure had taken more practical and concrete steps to improve the condition of the minorities in the state.
The veteran CPI(M) leader also strongly criticised the state's law and order situation saying "It is most embarrassing to go through newspapers with almost daily reports of extortion, rape, molestation and assault on women.
"There should be an immediate action to restore law and order and ensure people safety and security," he said.
Speaking on the occasion, senior CPI(M) leader Goutam Deb said the state required an environment of cooperation among all political parties, instead of confrontation, for faster development.
Deb also threatened to launch a march to the relocated state Secretariat Nabanna protesting against the alleged "reign of terror unleashed by the ruling TMC".
