The e-ticketing website of IRCTC booked the highest ever e-tickets on a single day yesterday. The record booking of 5.72 lakh e-tickets have been achieved on September 2, surpassing the earlier record of 5.04 lakhs on August 12, this year, said a senior IRCTC official.
This is the third time more than 5 lakh tickets have been booked on a single day this year, the first time was on March 1, 2013.
IRCTC has booked a total of 135 lakh e-tickets with an average of 4.34 lakh per day in August this year against a total of 123 lakh e-tickets with an average of 3.99 lakh daily in the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of about 10 per cent in booking.
The total number of passengers booked by IRCTC has also gone up to 233 lakh in August 2013 against 220 lakhs achieved in August 2012.
IRCTC has also recently launched the SMS-based ticketing through which one can book a train ticket with a basic feature mobile phone, by sending simple SMSes.
