A speeding EMU train killed a railway gangman working on tracks under the Mohan Nagar over-bridge near here today.
The gangman, Baij Nath (56), along with other railway staffers, was on routine maintenance work near Sahibabad Railway Station.
According to members of Railway Workers' Union, around 12:45 PM the New Delhi-bound EMU train suddenly approached the site without blowing horn. The whole gang working on the tracks was caught unaware. Baijnath, who was hit by the engine of the train, died on the spot.
Members of the Railway Union have alleged that the driver of the EMU train knew that the track repair and maintenance work was in progress under the Mohan Nagar rail over-bridge.
The driver negligently drove the train at a high speed without blowing any horn, therefore the railway staff working on the track could not move away, they alleged.
Angry group of railway gangmen gathered at the Sahibabad Railway Station and raised slogans against the negligent train driver, demanding his arrest.
Meanwhile, when the EMU train returned from New Delhi and stopped at Sahibabad Railway Station around 2.00 PM, the angry workers blocked the tracks and rushed towards the EMU engine and dragged the driver out.
The driver, however, managed to free himself and fled the spot.
Sahibabad Railway Station Superintendent N P Malik said the gangmen laid down the body of Baijnath on the tracks and staged a sit-in.
Railway traffic was blocked on the line for more than one and a half hours. Several trains including Purva Express were delayed by more than one hour.
Station Superintendent Malik pacified the railway staffers by assuring them of legal action against the errant EMU driver. He then called another driver to take the EMU train to Ghaziabad.
In-charge of Government Railway Police Pankaj Lavania said a case has been registered and the body has been sent for post-mortem.
