The Tripura government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incidence of violence at the Agartala Government Medical College, which left at least 27 people, including nine photo journalists, injured.
State Health Minister Tapan Chakraborty said a magisterial inquiry by the District Magistrate of West Tripura district was ordered last night and erring persons would not be spared.
Police said trouble started yesterday when the relatives of a patient Ratna Chakraborty called the media alleging that she died in the hospital due to "negligence" of the medical staff.
The patient party also had an altercation with the junior doctors of the hospital.
When the media persons arrived in the medical college for coverage, the junior doctors and the medical students attacked the journalists, the patient parties and other people present in the hospital, police said.
They went on the rampage breaking the doors and window panes, damaging vehicles, motor bikes and also set ablaze one motor cycle.
At least 27 people, including nine photo journalists, were injured in the incident and admitted to other hospitals for treatment.
A delegation of the Agartala Press Club yesterday met Information minister Bhanu Lal Saha and Health Minister Tapan Chakraborty and demanded punishment for the erring junior doctors and interns for assaulting media people.
Meanwhile, 500 junior doctors and medical interns at GB Hospital have organised a sit-in before the medical college suspending their work since this morning.
They stated that neither they attacked patients' party nor media people, rather media projected their role improperly.
However, Senior doctor and faculty at the Medical College, Dr. Pradip Bhowmik said senior doctors have joined services from the morning.
He assured that all patients were currently being treated properly.
Meanwhile, Principal of the medical college addressed the interns and junior doctors sitting in mass demonstration asking them to withdraw their agitation and join their duties.
