Ten people, including five policemen, were yesterday injured when residents of Potha village of Surankote tehsil attacked the police team that had gone to arrest an accused wanted in the rape and murder case of an 85-year-old woman, police said.
SHO Surankote police station Inspector Charanjeet Singh was among those injured in the attack on the police team which had gone to arrest Imtiaz Ahmed, who had earlier managed to escape from police custody a fortnight ago.
He said the police has lodged two FIRs in which 20 persons have been booked for attacking the police team with the intention to help a rape and murder accused.
The residents of the village yesterday tried to block Jammu-Poonch national highway following which police had to resort to tear-gas shelling and canecharging in which five civilians also received injuries.
