Two persons who were non-tribals working under the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) were today abducted by suspected Bru and NLFT militants from Mizoram- Bangladesh bordering Mamit district, police said.
A massive combing operation was launched to secure the release of Hokum Singh of Haryana, working as overseer in the BRO and driver Mohammad Buizul Islam (56) of Aizawl and arrest the kidnappers, Superintendent of Police Lalnunmawia said.
The SP said nine militants, some of them armed with sophisticated weapons, abducted 22 people and later released local civilians and manual workers, but took the two captive.
The abduction took place between abandoned anti-poaching camp of the state Environment and Forests department at Chikha and Tuipuibari village inside the Dampa Tiger reserve.
Police suspect the abductors and the captives might have reached the thick forest inside Bangladesh.
Islam, according to the Police, resided in Ramthar locality in Aizawl where he is living with his Mizo wife and three sons and is known by two other Mizo names - Zoluta and Thangchhuaka.
There had been ten incidents of abduction in Mizoram since 2011, and except for a single case of kidnapping at Mizoram-Assam border Kolasib district, all the abductions occurred in Mamit district on Mizoram-Bangladesh-Tripura border and a total number of 38 people have been kidnapped, which included today's abduction.
A majority of the abductions were done by Bru Democratic Front of Mizoram (BDFM) and National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) combine.
