The coupling mechanism of two coaches of a Mumbai-Howrah train today broke at Saragaon station in Chhattisgarh's Jangjir-Champa district, causing panic among hundreds of passengers of the train and those crowding the platforms, officials said.
They added that no passenger was injured and the impact of the coupling giving way was minimised because the train was at a slow speed and the loco pilot had applied emergency brakes immediately.
The station falls under Bilaspur railway division, they added.
"The incident of uncoupling of two coaches of the 12869 Mumbai-Howrah weekly superfast special occurred at 10am today. There is no injury reported to anyone and the train left for its destination after a delay of one hour," an official said.
The coupling mechanism consists of equipment like the coupler, a knuckle, a yoke among other things that bind together coaches to form a train, explained officials.
"The reason why the coupling broke is being investigated. No other train was disrupted due to this incident," the official added.
