Two ultras of the outlawed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), who had fled during an encounter with the police, have surrendered to the police in Meghalayas South Garo Hills district, police said today.
The duo, who were close to GNLA chief Sohan D Shira, had surrendered in Baghmara police station yesterday evening but did not submit any arms, superintendent of police A Sangma said.
They had escaped along with Shira during the encounter with the police on November 16 at Halwa Atong village.
They got separated during the police combing operations. They trekked for days and arrived at Gittimggre village where they contacted church leaders for their surrender, which took place yesterday, Sangma said.
Shira is still absconding, the SP said.
Formed in 2010, the GNLA is demanding a separate Garoland on the lines of the Bodo Territorial Council in Assam and is involved in killing, kidnapping for ransom and terrorising people in the five western Garo Hills districts in Meghalaya.
